2026 isn't even halfway through, yet that hasn't stopped some of your favorite corporate-owned music media outlets from churning out mid-year lists. Even the most well-intentioned coverage of the year's Best Of... So Far albums, songs, or artists smacks of a certain quiet desperation, the institutional hope that old engagement tricks that worked ten-plus years ago might still apply in our AI-slopped present-day.

Existing as an alternative to that failing model, the CABBAGES newsletter prefers not to rehash consensus picks in the hopes of further validating readers' tastes. After all, the whole point of what I'm doing here is to promote hip-hop/rap music discovery, with a focus on independent artistry. So rather than remind you about some 2026 records you've likely been rocking with, I'd rather use this space to share some of the good-to-great albums I haven't been able to cover this year.

Like we always do at this time, this particular list serves primarily to spotlight artists CABBAGES hasn't covered much here before–though of course there are bound to be exceptions. Keep in mind, this isn't about pulling the most obscure picks as some nerdy flex. So while some of you may have already heard some of the ten picks below, my hope is that many if not most readers will seize the opportunity to check out the ones they haven't heard yet.

What you definitely won't find below are major label releases, nor any albums/tapes/EPs I've already written about this year. And because this newsletter remains a one-man show, please note that this selection is subjective, not comprehensive. Still, if you're reading this, you'll probably find something here we agree on.

ANKHLEJOHN & V Don, EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL DIED EARLY

Having already dropped projects with such producers as August Fanon and Cookin' Soul, this hugely talented Washington D.C figure links with one of the underground's sturdiest beatmakers for this streets-feeding set teeming with boisterous bars and shimmering instrumentals. (buy it / stream it)

Rosco P Coldchain & Nicholas Craven, Play With Something Safe

After some 14 years of incarceration, the return of this North Philly rap fave and erstwhile Star Trak signee couldn't have been soundtracked by a more fitting producer, as evidenced by this potent collaboration with Boldy James' Quebecois go-to. (buy it / stream it)

Ealuhri, YOU'RE WELCOME WORLD

Popstar Benny has done it again, executive-producing this sonically aggressive and squelchy effort from the creative 21-year-old ATL denizen that deserves far more attention than anyone currently claiming dominance over the nebulous "experimental rap" subgenre. (buy it / stream it)

Myaap, Pixie Dust

Representing her city and its homegrown lowend sound with unapologetic self-confidence, the Milwaukee hip-hop artist converts local vibes into something broader and more resonant on this mixtape full of intoxicatingly repetitious hooks and idiosyncratic flows. (buy it / stream it)

Passport Rav & Bloo Azul, 83rd Strike

The robust third installment in this New York rap duo's hopefully ongoing series continues pushing their particularly remarkably brand of rugged boom bap revivalism, each lyricist making memorable moments happen throughout its 14-track runtime. (buy it / stream it)

Pootie, ALLEGORY SUPREME

Having previously relied on left-of-center instrumentalists like Driveby and Nothing_neue to bolster his New Jersey rap stylings, the gifted spitter now seizes the means of production on this audacious yet highly effective solo project. (buy it / stream it)

Rapswell, MAX POETICS

With enterprising production by his PENPALS producer pal SQ, the first proper solo album from the New York-based emcee centers his casually verbose yet subtly reflective verses, with the likes of ELUCID and NAHreally lending supporting features. (buy it / stream it)

RJD2 & Supastition, According To...

Two American hip-hop veterans–one a DJ/producer/renaissance man, the other a consummate North Carolinian emcee–unite for a veritable b-boy's delight that benefits greatly from both artist's respective experiences over the past two-and-a-half decades. (buy it / stream it)

Ronday & Wino Willy, From Baton Rouge To Babylon

A deeply engaging Baton Rouge rapper links with an independent producer par excellence to deliver a regionally specific joint endeavor that exceeds its funky foundations to showcase a methodically well-paced series of soulful songs. (buy it / stream it)

sleepingdogs, DOG COMPLEX

Real heads know that whenever andrew and Jesse The Tree get together, high caliber rhyming invariably results–which is precisely the case on their latest duo outing backed by aesthetically groovy beats by Controller 7, ialive, and Small Professor, to name but a few. (buy it / stream it)
